Serena Rolls Over Dinara Safina for Aussie Open Title

2009 Australian Open: Day 13

Serena Willams cruised over Dinara Safina today 6-0, 6-3 to win her 4th Australian Open title and to claim the world number one rank.

In just 59 minutes’ time, Williams obliterated Dinara Safina to the point where Safina called herself a “ballboy” compared to Serena.  This was yet another showcase of how powerfully Williams can hit the tennis ball.  This was Williams’ 10th Grand Slam title, and she earned every point of it.

The number one rank came as a bit of a surprise as Williams said “I actually forgot until the end when I was saying hi to my box. They’re like, ‘Hey, you’re No. 1.’ I was like, ‘Oh, yeah.’”  Williams started the year out as the number 2 rank, but fought her way back to reclaim the number one with wins over big-name players like Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina.
