With just 16 games to go in their regular season, the Montreal Canadians fired their head coach of almost three years Guy Carbonneau. The Canadians were struggling and felt this move was necessary.
Montreal (35-24-7), sits in fifth place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference, however, their 77 points is tied with the Carolina Hurricanes, who sit in sixth. Furthermore, Montreal sits only one point better then team seeded seventh, eight, and ninth as of today.
Montreal, who finished first in the East last year has never met their high expectations this season.
In 230 games with the Canadians, Guy Carbonneau had an overall record 124-83-23.
Before taking over behind the bench for the Canadians, Carbonneau also played for them. In thirteen seasons with the team, Guy won the Stanley Cup twice with Montreal and also captained the team for five seasons.
Carbonneau will be replaced by the team’s general manager, Bob Gainey, who made the decision today to fire his Head Coach.
Montreal, in their 100th season as a franchise, looks to march towards the playoffs when they skate on home ice versus the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.
